Slightly findings

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 2, 2009, 5:40 AM

Why do we fav?

The most common reason is that we just like the work. There can be thousand of other reasons but this one
is most obvious and common.
My opinion is that more correct reason for :+fav: should be: "We like the work and we want to support
artist."
Why? Because :+fav: on DA is something more than just a feature for your collection. Favorites = rating.
When you add something to your favorites you create the content of DeviantArt. What do you see when you
come to DA first? Most popular works. Faving the work you make it available for other watchers.
I've already made journal entry about a lot of crap in the popular. (Please, don't say that something i suppose
to be crap, the other one calls ART. Crap is always crap, but always there are at least one idiot who will call
it artificial.) So now i want to say the following: fav  only what you like or what you want other people to
see. Remember, once you will DA and see nothing you would like to see.
Of course, we have :icondagnostic: and :iconhellobaby: who helps us to explore unknown but great artists but this is not enough, what you look at depends on you.

The summary of the poll

Here are general results: 70% of people suppose favorite to be the best compliment. Reading comments to
poll you can learn that most of people think that :+fav: is good but :+fav:+comment is better.
But there is one important answer that i missed in my poll. I thought about it only after :iconpaulmckinnon:'s
comment: " People who say they like your pic but don't fav it, their words don't ring true."
I should add answer: Positive comment without fav means nothing. (it is very intersting to know how many
people think so).
It was hard to choose using my straight answer. But i haven' my purpose big and complicated social research
considering motivation of faving and other stuff. I was interested in general results and i got them.

One step to popularity

And now from the contrary...Tonnes of faves give you popularity (or you can just become :iconraincookie: :XD:). Views and comments on your deviations are useless. Ratio favorites/views should be 1/4 (better 1/2), if it is 1/10 or lower  - your efforts do not deserve the result. So i don't want to spend longer time wasted. No more works that are viewed but not faved. Favs are confirmation that people like your work (conclusion based on poll results), when they look at it and do not fave, it means that work is not good enough to be placed in their collection.
So you won't see:
Nudes, fetish ot hot picts
Portraits with set light and technically hard
Provoking works
Complicated arrangements
Concept with more then one straight thought
Works that needs time or money, or photographic skills
My next 10 or more works will be based on the analysis of the most popular works.

PLEASE, DO NOT THINK THAT I'M OFFENDED OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS, I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT PEOPLE LIKE AND WHY

i think people who don't appreciate the views and comment without a fave, just cares more about faves, comments and views. than enjoying that someone has interest in their art (if that was the purpose if that person was interested) or making the art. anyway it's just my opinion Meow :3 also nice journal about this :)

my point is that here at DA everything goes around faves and if you want to support artist the best is to give a fave, because otherwise work will be never seen by other watchers and just lost
i saw this million times, when i browsing for some great artist in the internet and suddenly find his page here, but no one knows about it, this was with Godfried Helnwine and Jan Saudek..

Try being a writer like me. Th art i am most proud of is base s on test. I create with words. Just getting people to LOOK at my stuff is difficult. before we get to favs or comments they first have to look.

ehh Everyone has talent to be a writer. Writing is just using your own special words to show the world what is inside you. It is your own special way to show the world how you see things. Everyone is valid in that sense.

i think it's a lot less straightforward than this. some artists are exposed, known, a lot of people come to their galleries because they are popular. an unknown artist, no matter how good, if he doesn't have time to put work in clubs and similar will simply go unnoticed. i also noticed that people readily fave crap if it already has lots of faves, and won't easily fave an excellent pic if it has no faves yet.
i think you are in a good position to find out answers to your questions because you are very exposed on dA and many people view your pics, but unknown artists will make a big mistake to rely on this communnity to give them answers on how they are doing, because this communnity operates largely on popularity and networking. sad but true.
but if you get your stuff seen by many, you'll get a good idea (still, it's the "hot pics" that get female atrists most easily noticed, again, your photos are marvellous, but many others aren't, just naked flesh that certain majority likes to see, like what we see in DDs every day. again, sad, but true)

When I +fav something it means I like it and I want to be able to easily find it again for future veiwing :3
I usually only leave a comment if I have some constructive critisism to add, or if I have have something clever to say :D
I think the best way to show an artist you support their work is to put them on your watch list, to me it says you liked their gallery and wish to continue seeing more of their work.

the main reason i fav/collect work is to keep track of it, so i can see it again easily whenever i like.

writing comments is good too, whether it is for showing appreciation or to ask questions about the piece of art.
I must say you're doing an excellent job in replying to people, considered the number of comments you receive.

One more thing you deserve to know: the standards of your work are really high in a continous way! Most people have highs and lows, some works are great, other works are less great but you, oh men, you seem to put such an effort in submitting only top quality deviations. I really appreciate this, it's a pleasure to watch you. (in all senses!;))

I guess that's maybe truth, but there is also truth that many people just fave works because they're fans of some artist, and they dont' really care the work. I've seen really bad works in the most popular page, and they recieve hundreds of faves.

Good luck with your experiment, by the way! ^^

I usually tend not to fav half-naked girl-pictures, or anything that's sexually provocative. I do tend to comment though. I think it's because I'm a bit shy to have stuff like that listed under my favourites, as it would be so blatantly obvious that the female anatomy occupy all of my mind most of the time. Particularly from great angles. So, does this make me a pervert? Perhaps... I'm a hedonist, I get drawn to what my senses enjoy. These things are however not always body parts, but art has that way of enticing the senses, and the strongest of the senses is the sex-drive. And though it's a bit unfair too to keep +fav'ing that type of art (that's at least my excuse). But I always comment on it. Particularly when there is a beautiful woman, a great artist, and a (seemingly) great individual behind it. Which is why I stick around here.

But yeah, I'm probably a bit of a perv too.

I'm probably a bit late to comment, but I see the :+fav: as saying that "this piece strikes a chord with me emotionally/artistically" rather then just saying "I like this piece" or "Good work, well done".

I've commented that I like a work without :+fav:ing before, just because something doesn't have an impact on me doesn't mean that their work of art isn't of quality and meaning.

I'm not much of an artist myself really, and I don't put anything up on DA. So maybe I just don't see things the same way, but why make art just to get :+fav:s. It's only the internet, random online people's opinions shouldn't have that much weight so as to direct your creative spirit.

I have to admit: Most of the time when i set a favourite it is because i want to find this certain photography, painting or whatever again.

It's a reminder for me - from time to time i browse the favourites and have a look at things i like again.

It's that easy in my case. :)

I've always felt that a comment is usually more beneficial and gives you a fuzzier feeling, as they give a lot more input into how the person feels about your work.
"I like this" is all that a favourite says, and it doesnt say why.
as opposed to, "I really like the colouring of the glass in the left corner, it perfectly balances out the tone in her face"
But... thats of course if its a good comment, as I've seen with many of you popular artists people think less about what they are posting if the picture has been put up just recently, and really just rush to post something, not mattering what it is, as they just want the first page views, which is why people leech, and these 10 or so comment 'conversations' occur only on the front page and not the second or third.

It's just a sad thing when people are more concerned with getting noticed through first commenting on someone elses hard work, rather than making their own, which may or may not recieve recognition later on. Usually through several people finding it over time and others noticing it on their favourites when cruising pages, or people searching things.
My one image "FAIL" is my most popular image, its a very blurry and crappy shot, but due to fandoms of the internet, its gained 99 favourites, and 1500 views, while the majority of my actual work has recieved less than 7 favourites, and 80 views.
[link]
I call that my 'human study peice'
compared to my other most popular photo.. with 8 favourites and was taken 6 months or so before this, so it has had a fair bit more exposure.. and is not my best work still.
[link]
my comics I understand getting a little attention as people like to laugh. But it also has 500 views and only 12 favs.
[link]

a lot of things like nudes dont even get favourited just because the person is shy about what they look at and enjoy. I used to be one of those people :giggle:

What I'm really trying to say here is, favourites just means the person likes them and are too lazy to leave a comment, if they comment and favourite they really do enjoy the piece. If they comment without leaving a favourite, well they enjoyed it a lot, and either they werent blown away by it enough, or they just hadnt thought about favouriting at the time, which is a bit of a shame to artists like myself who are trying to become better known, but its completely understandable to me, its just human nature. :)

I find you to be a very wonderful person to talk to as well, both as a beautiful woman, and an artist who shows thought put into each peice of her work.

I am a little unsure what the post size limit on DA is so I think I'll stop typing for now, but if you wish to talk more just note me or add me on MSN (if you have it) my msn is Pheonx@hotmail.com

I look forward to your next pieces and some more of your insight on the way people think. :)

maybe not lazy but busy
or like me - i can't give big and good comments, all i can say: "Great capture!" or "That's amazing", so i prefer faves, if i can't say something useful, fav just says quick "i like it"

anyway with this post i wanted to remember people that fav is something more then your own personal thing because it makes rating for artist :)
so we should think before fav, fac what we like and don't fav if we don't

Popularity is somehting quite weird here... It's true that crap art gets lot of favs, and that's because most people here are not artists and just teens (like your says one of your pools), but there are also amazing photographs which have tons of favs as well. Something I found quite annoying is when amazing pictures just have no favs or no more than 10 favs, plus, the pictures uplodaded by someone with tons of watchers will always have lot of favs, therefore, it will be in the popular section, harvesting more and more favs and watchers. An example of that is like the pics I have submitted. Sometimes I submit an image and it gets 50 instant favs, most of them non watchers, many months later (even years) I upload the same picture and gets no more than 3 favs! That's quite, quite, quite odd! So obviously the amount of faves means nothing more than getting an extra fun in DA and such. At the end, life works the same...

popularity here is reachable and very often it does not depends on artist skills

But do you have any idea about why exactly the same pic that got tons of favs can get just few ones when re-submitting after some months or even years? Even having 300 watchers or more and even in different accounts. I found that quite weird, no sense. Do you have any idea why happens that?

right time, right place, more people browsing DA
for example, there were less works in the same category and they belonged to not popular people => your work is higher in the cathegory => more people watch it, or more your frineds were online and faved the work when it appeared,it appeared in popular very quick => your work is higher in the cathegory and so one
there could be different combinations of different factors that ultimately determine the outcome
i can't say exaclty if i wasn't online during this

well..if i fave a pic, i fave it for my collection, because i might want to look at it again and faving it is the best way to save them without saving them on my computer, because i already have 1xxx pictures.
if i comment but dont fave, means i like it, i am impressed, but i don't need the picture..like i won't use it for wallpapers or other things. or i don't need to look at it in the future, coz there are too many other pretty pictures waiting..
that#s what i think so i don't agree on the part with "Positive comment without fav means nothing". it means some people like the art, but it may not be the thing they are currently looking for
