Slightly findings

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 2, 2009, 5:40 AM

Why do we fav?

The most common reason is that we just like the work. There can be thousand of other reasons but this one
is most obvious and common.
My opinion is that more correct reason for :+fav: should be: "We like the work and we want to support
artist."
Why? Because :+fav: on DA is something more than just a feature for your collection. Favorites = rating.
When you add something to your favorites you create the content of DeviantArt. What do you see when you
come to DA first? Most popular works. Faving the work you make it available for other watchers.
I've already made journal entry about a lot of crap in the popular. (Please, don't say that something i suppose
to be crap, the other one calls ART. Crap is always crap, but always there are at least one idiot who will call
it artificial.) So now i want to say the following: fav  only what you like or what you want other people to
see. Remember, once you will DA and see nothing you would like to see.
Of course, we have :icondagnostic: and :iconhellobaby: who helps us to explore unknown but great artists but this is not enough, what you look at depends on you.

The summary of the poll

Here are general results: 70% of people suppose favorite to be the best compliment. Reading comments to
poll you can learn that most of people think that :+fav: is good but :+fav:+comment is better.
But there is one important answer that i missed in my poll. I thought about it only after :iconpaulmckinnon:'s
comment: " People who say they like your pic but don't fav it, their words don't ring true."
I should add answer: Positive comment without fav means nothing. (it is very intersting to know how many
people think so).
It was hard to choose using my straight answer. But i haven' my purpose big and complicated social research
considering motivation of faving and other stuff. I was interested in general results and i got them.

One step to popularity

And now from the contrary...Tonnes of faves give you popularity (or you can just become :iconraincookie: :XD:). Views and comments on your deviations are useless. Ratio favorites/views should be 1/4 (better 1/2), if it is 1/10 or lower  - your efforts do not deserve the result. So i don't want to spend longer time wasted. No more works that are viewed but not faved. Favs are confirmation that people like your work (conclusion based on poll results), when they look at it and do not fave, it means that work is not good enough to be placed in their collection.
So you won't see:
Nudes, fetish ot hot picts
Portraits with set light and technically hard
Provoking works
Complicated arrangements
Concept with more then one straight thought
Works that needs time or money, or photographic skills
My next 10 or more works will be based on the analysis of the most popular works.

PLEASE, DO NOT THINK THAT I'M OFFENDED OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS, I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT PEOPLE LIKE AND WHY

the main reason i fav/collect work is to keep track of it, so i can see it again easily whenever i like.

writing comments is good too, whether it is for showing appreciation or to ask questions about the piece of art.
I must say you're doing an excellent job in replying to people, considered the number of comments you receive.

One more thing you deserve to know: the standards of your work are really high in a continous way! Most people have highs and lows, some works are great, other works are less great but you, oh men, you seem to put such an effort in submitting only top quality deviations. I really appreciate this, it's a pleasure to watch you. (in all senses!;))

I guess that's maybe truth, but there is also truth that many people just fave works because they're fans of some artist, and they dont' really care the work. I've seen really bad works in the most popular page, and they recieve hundreds of faves.

Good luck with your experiment, by the way! ^^

I usually tend not to fav half-naked girl-pictures, or anything that's sexually provocative. I do tend to comment though. I think it's because I'm a bit shy to have stuff like that listed under my favourites, as it would be so blatantly obvious that the female anatomy occupy all of my mind most of the time. Particularly from great angles. So, does this make me a pervert? Perhaps... I'm a hedonist, I get drawn to what my senses enjoy. These things are however not always body parts, but art has that way of enticing the senses, and the strongest of the senses is the sex-drive. And though it's a bit unfair too to keep +fav'ing that type of art (that's at least my excuse). But I always comment on it. Particularly when there is a beautiful woman, a great artist, and a (seemingly) great individual behind it. Which is why I stick around here.

But yeah, I'm probably a bit of a perv too.

I'm probably a bit late to comment, but I see the :+fav: as saying that "this piece strikes a chord with me emotionally/artistically" rather then just saying "I like this piece" or "Good work, well done".

I've commented that I like a work without :+fav:ing before, just because something doesn't have an impact on me doesn't mean that their work of art isn't of quality and meaning.

I'm not much of an artist myself really, and I don't put anything up on DA. So maybe I just don't see things the same way, but why make art just to get :+fav:s. It's only the internet, random online people's opinions shouldn't have that much weight so as to direct your creative spirit.

I have to admit: Most of the time when i set a favourite it is because i want to find this certain photography, painting or whatever again.

It's a reminder for me - from time to time i browse the favourites and have a look at things i like again.

It's that easy in my case. :)
