The most common reason is that we just like the work. There can be thousand of other reasons but this one
is most obvious and common.
My opinion is that more correct reason for

should be: "We like the work and we want to support
artist."
Why? Because

on DA is something more than just a feature for your collection. Favorites = rating.
When you add something to your favorites you create the content of DeviantArt. What do you see when you
come to DA first? Most popular works. Faving the work you make it available for other watchers.
I've already made journal entry about a lot of crap in the popular. (Please, don't say that something i suppose
to be crap, the other one calls ART. Crap is always crap, but always there are at least one idiot who will call
it artificial.) So now i want to say the following: fav only what you like or what you want other people to
see. Remember, once you will DA and see nothing you would like to see.
Of course, we have

and

who helps us to explore unknown but great artists but this is not enough, what you look at depends on you.
Here are general results: 70% of people suppose favorite to be the best compliment. Reading comments to
poll you can learn that most of people think that

is good but

+comment is better.
But there is one important answer that i missed in my poll. I thought about it only after

's
comment: " People who say they like your pic but don't fav it, their words don't ring true."
I should add answer: Positive comment without fav means nothing. (it is very intersting to know how many
people think so).
It was hard to choose using my straight answer. But i haven' my purpose big and complicated social research
considering motivation of faving and other stuff. I was interested in general results and i got them.
And now from the contrary...Tonnes of faves give you popularity (or you can just become

). Views and comments on your deviations are useless. Ratio favorites/views should be 1/4 (better 1/2), if it is 1/10 or lower - your efforts do not deserve the result. So i don't want to spend longer time wasted. No more works that are viewed but not faved. Favs are confirmation that people like your work (conclusion based on poll results), when they look at it and do not fave, it means that work is not good enough to be placed in their collection.
So you won't see:
Nudes, fetish ot hot picts
Portraits with set light and technically hard
Provoking works
Complicated arrangements
Concept with more then one straight thought
Works that needs time or money, or photographic skills
My next 10 or more works will be based on the analysis of the most popular works.
PLEASE, DO NOT THINK THAT I'M OFFENDED OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS, I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT PEOPLE LIKE AND WHY

I´m looking forward to your next ~10 works!
but i really want to make that small experiment
"I like this" is all that a favourite says, and it doesnt say why.
as opposed to, "I really like the colouring of the glass in the left corner, it perfectly balances out the tone in her face"
But... thats of course if its a good comment, as I've seen with many of you popular artists people think less about what they are posting if the picture has been put up just recently, and really just rush to post something, not mattering what it is, as they just want the first page views, which is why people leech, and these 10 or so comment 'conversations' occur only on the front page and not the second or third.
It's just a sad thing when people are more concerned with getting noticed through first commenting on someone elses hard work, rather than making their own, which may or may not recieve recognition later on. Usually through several people finding it over time and others noticing it on their favourites when cruising pages, or people searching things.
My one image "FAIL" is my most popular image, its a very blurry and crappy shot, but due to fandoms of the internet, its gained 99 favourites, and 1500 views, while the majority of my actual work has recieved less than 7 favourites, and 80 views.

I call that my 'human study peice'
compared to my other most popular photo.. with 8 favourites and was taken 6 months or so before this, so it has had a fair bit more exposure.. and is not my best work still.

my comics I understand getting a little attention as people like to laugh. But it also has 500 views and only 12 favs.

a lot of things like nudes dont even get favourited just because the person is shy about what they look at and enjoy. I used to be one of those people
What I'm really trying to say here is, favourites just means the person likes them and are too lazy to leave a comment, if they comment and favourite they really do enjoy the piece. If they comment without leaving a favourite, well they enjoyed it a lot, and either they werent blown away by it enough, or they just hadnt thought about favouriting at the time, which is a bit of a shame to artists like myself who are trying to become better known, but its completely understandable to me, its just human nature.
I find you to be a very wonderful person to talk to as well, both as a beautiful woman, and an artist who shows thought put into each peice of her work.
I am a little unsure what the post size limit on DA is so I think I'll stop typing for now, but if you wish to talk more just note me or add me on MSN (if you have it) my msn is Pheonx@hotmail.com
I look forward to your next pieces and some more of your insight on the way people think.
or like me - i can't give big and good comments, all i can say: "Great capture!" or "That's amazing", so i prefer faves, if i can't say something useful, fav just says quick "i like it"
anyway with this post i wanted to remember people that fav is something more then your own personal thing because it makes rating for artist
so we should think before fav, fac what we like and don't fav if we don't
that is true
